#FORWARD: On the importance of design in building the future
#RDW2022 #romaniandesignweek #forward #rdw10ani
This year, between 13th-22nd of May, we celebrate ten years of Romanian Design Week. During its first decade, the festival has contributed to the growth of Romanian design scene and industry, by promoting collaboration and partnership within the creative community and by growing a professional network of established designers and architects.
This year we focus on moving #forward together by gathering a series of organisations, designers, initiatives and events to showcase and highlight the contribution that creative industries have in designing a sustainable future, a more inclusive future, a better future.
Moreover, the theme also marks the opening of a new chapter in Romanian Design Week’s mission: encouraging the consumption of products and services generated by the disciplines of design and architecture.
"Ten years ago we started RDW because we believed that the talent and combined minds of valuable designers could generate change for the better in the lives of individuals, communities, cities or countries and we believed the right tools in doing so would be exhibitions, conferences, awards, platforms and online channels dedicated to this universe. We believe that integrating design into Romanian society, in terms of understanding, consumption, use in projects and business, way of thinking and seeing things, will lead to the modernization of Romanian society and economy, and this is still our mission every edition", Andrei Gavrilă-Borțun, founder of Romanian Design Week & CEO The Institute.
For the third consecutive year, the festival’s main venue will be Combinatul Fondului Plastic, home of an extremely valuable and effervescent artistic community. It will host exhibitions, events, conferences, workshops and an outdoor space created especially for RDW visitors, who will be able to enjoy a ten-day design-themed holiday in the city.
Romanian Design Week has a history of finding iconic buildings in the city center and reintegrating them in the public circuit. For our 10th anniversary, in partnership with the Bucharest Office of Order of Architects in Romania, we are preparing a special program in the heritage ensemble "Așezămintele Ion I.C. Brătianu".
As the festival aims to contribute to the development of local creative industries in a global context, this year’s program also includes a series of international design exhibitions meant to encourage dialogue between the local design market and the international scene.
We will continue to celebrate creative communities and local hubs through the Design GO! program, a festival format that gathers numerous satellite events and special design destinations around Bucharest and in its Creative Quarter.
This edition’s program will also showcase the results of the strategic partnerships that The Institute has established with the European Commission Representation in Romania, the Romanian Cultural Institute, the Bucharest Office of Order of Architects in Romania, The Union of Plastic Artists, Combinatul Fondului Plastic, Baza. Deschidem orașul Association, NOD makerspace, ARCEN.
