Simina Filat is a modern-day creator who combines design, craft and innovation with sustainability principles and an openness to collaboration in the form of co-creation. In her trade, she wears many hats (or bags): from designer, to thinker, to maker, but most of all, she identifies as Human- with passions and interests and creative obsessions and an insatiable drive to bring about something worth-while and special that can set important things in motion.
With a keen understanding of fashion design, our relationship to accessories, and an entrepreneurial spirit, Simina Filat also stands her ground when it comes to her values and beliefs by turning her workshop sustainable and focusing her gaze on “the new world” of recycled/ up-cycled and salvaged materials.
With many credentials in her bag, Simina Filat is a proud member of UAP - The Plastic Artist Union of Romania - design branch, DAC - World’s Leading Designers - part of World Design Consortium and CONAF - National Confederation of Female Entrepreneurship. Combining the best in somewhat antagonistic fields as a testament to her versatility, she has both a bachelor degree in Management, Accounting, Audit and one in Fashion Design.
KAPAO THU
Sustainability is no longer just a word. It is a lifestyle, a new consumer style. A new society is shaping and I am happy to be part of it, to contribute to a certain degree to this change.
The inspiration for this object came from the trend of knitting with giant wool and especially from the famous scene in “Lady and the Tramp” movie. Although this is an object knitted by hand, it makes me think of that plate full of tangled spaghetti.
This object is entirely based on Zero Waste concepts. Using recycled and reused materials, I have capitalized on every centimeter of waste, by involving a lot of labor for each object. It is an object for which, at first, 80 linear meters of tube have been knitted. The whole process takes three working days.
The name of the object is "Kapao thu" and it comes from the Vietnamese word for "bag". All the objects from this collection are called after the word "bag" in different languages from all around the world.
