The eighth edition of Romanian Design Week presents DESIGN FLAGS, a new category of events within the festival that brings together a series of exhibitions documenting the evolution of design from international cultural perspectives. The seven exhibitions are held with embassies or cultural institutions from the Czech Republic, Denmark, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands and Hungary.
The exhibitions from DESIGN FLAGS category will be held in the Qreator by IQOS hub (Aviatorilor Avenue, no. 8A), an important meeting point for the creative community in Bucharest, which becomes on this occasion a partner space of Romanian Design Week 2020. The exhibitions will be open to the general public between September 13th-20th, between 10 A.M. and 8 P.M. The access is free and dedicated exclusively to people over 18. The event will be organized taking into account social distancing and all the rules and recommendations valid at that time.
The presence of international design exhibitions within RDW encourages the dialogue between the Romanian and international design market and the development of local creative industries beyond the country's borders. They investigate new approaches and concerns in design, present innovative ideas and products that manage to redefine the sphere which they are part of. At the same time, they bring to the public projects that contribute to shaping an optimistic future.
Thus, at Qreator, visitors will be able to admire street posters from Madrid that explore the history of the city, posters of the Hungarian Association of Graphic Designers, but also the Exhibition of the Design Institute of the University of Arts and Design in Budapest (MOME). To these are added the interactive installation created by Chloé Rutzerveld, food designer, Future Food Formula, which opens a window to the agriculture of the future, product design exhibitions such as Made in CZ / Found in RO, which includes objects made in Czechoslovakia and so present in Romanian daily life before the Revolution or Normal Portugal, a collection of objects that have the potential to outline an aesthetic specific to Portuguese culture and that have already entered the Portuguese collective memory. The list is complemented by Matters - Rethinking Materials, an exhibition that investigates how the use of unconventional materials opens a discussion on sustainability in design, an exhibition developed by CHART and Designmuseum Danmark and curated by Line Ulrika Christiansen and Pernille Stockmarr of Designmuseum Danmark.
Design Flags is an initiative carried out together with the Spanish Embassy in Bucharest, the Hungarian Institute in Bucharest, the Czech Center, Designmuseum Danmark, CHART, Next Nature and KWY.studio.
Romanian Design Week 2020, an event presented by The Institute and UniCredit Bank, will take place between September 11th-20th, and this year will develop a special edition, designed to highlight the essential role of design in conceiving a better future, in a period in which creativity became more important than ever. The festival addresses CHANGE, the theme announced since the beginning of the year, updating its discourse and projects presented in accordance with the transformations and contributions brought by the creative industries during the pandemic, under the title CHANGE 2.0.
The main destination of Romanian Design Week 2020 will be Combinatul Fondului Plastic, a space with a special history.

A project of The Institute, Romanian Design Week has established itself in the seven editions so far as the most important multidisciplinary festival in Romania - an x-ray of the current stage of development of design and creative industries: architecture, urbanism, interior design, graphic design, illustration, clothing design, object design or other initiatives or projects that use creativity as the main development resource. Every year, Romanian Design Week draws a map of events and spaces that promote design. Starting with the 2020 edition, RDW proposes a new festival architecture and will approach each year a different theme around which the whole event will be outlined.
